To me, teachers need to hear from parents more but parents need to take on a share of the educational duties. I hear about lot of communication problems from both parties, and it's hard to take sides. Generally I think the best way to work it is if parents and teachers talk it has to be goal-oriented and proactive (not, 'Johnny isn't doing this and it's YOUR fault' but rather 'Johnny isn't doing this, and what can we do together as a team to make it better.'

Teamwork is essential, and the old adage 'It takes a village to raise a child' has never been truer. It's win-win when parents and teachers work together to educate children.

According to me a good time to contact your child’s teacher is during the first week of school. This gives you an opportunity to meet one another when neither has any complaints. Otherwise, the first teacher contact can be unpleasant. The teacher is usually calling to describe some unacceptable behavior or report a child’s tack of progress and her concern that a learning problem may exist.
