When trying to get kids to read more books, you'll need to come up with strategies to get them interested in the first place. A good one is to make sure there is something in the book that connect to your child's life. If you have a family pet that your child is close with, find books that feature the same animal. If you live in the city, see if you can find books that talk about that environment and features your child would be familiar with.

The key is to engage your child with their reading material. If they can see parts of their own life and background in a book, they are much more likely to turn the page!

I agree with your sentiment, but much can also be said for appealing to their curiosities and exposing them to the wealth of diversity illustrated through books. In addition to building useful schemas for future learning, you can create opportunities for them to discover the world outside their view.
